It’s important not to think of Zinc as a giant lump of dangerous-looking metal in this context, but rather an invisible essential trace element. Whilst you may remember it from school as number 30 on the periodic table, you may not be aware that its actually present within all bodily tissues and performs a number of essential functions throughout the body. But what we are really interested in here is why we keep hearing about Zinc when it comes to helping breakouts, and whether we need Zinc supplements for acne.
Why is it Good for Acne?
Zinc deficiencies are commonplace the world over, and acne is one of the biggest symptoms of it. So chances are that if you find yourself on this website then you are highly likely to be zinc deficient. By increasing your zinc intake you will have a much greater chance of both clearing your existing acne and preventing new acne from forming because zinc performs a number of functions that contrbute to the healthy functioning of the skin.
- Zinc has the ability to kill acne-causing bacteria. This may not be to the same extent as an antibiotic prescribed by a Doctor, but the best part about Zinc is that the bacteria are unable to develop a resistance to it as they can do with antibiotics.
- It reduces inflammation in the skin therefore will work on reducing the redness, pain and swelling of active breakouts.
- It increases your bodies ability to balance skin hormones – namely it blocks DHT resulting in a reduction of the skins sebum production – something all acne sufferers could do with. After all, less sebum means less blocked pores, and less blocked pores means less acne.
- It functions to carry skin-friendly Vitamins A and E to the skin, and there are no end to the benefits that those vitamins bring us.
Where to Find Zinc?
Zinc is commonly found in a number of different foods such as Spinach, Cashews, Almonds and Pumpkin Seeds, but is the most strongly abundant in Beef, Lamb and Oysters. These foods however can often be difficult to incorporate into our daily diets, especially in the quantity that will provide you with the recommended daily dosage of around 30mg of Zinc.
Chances are that you will therefore need to supplement your diet with a 30mg Zinc tablet, which is a convenient and effective way to achieve your daily dosage and ensure that you are adequately nourished so that the Zinc is able to help clear your acne on top of all the other vital functions that it performs.
There are many forms of Zinc available and the choices can be overwhelming if you don’t know very much about it, but what you are looking for is a form of Zinc that is easily absorbed by the body. For this you really only have two options; Zinc Picolinate or Zinc Methionine. All other forms of Zinc will not be thoroughly absorbed by your body and therefore will not provide you with the maximum benefits in your battle against acne.
Do not take your Zinc supplement on an empty stomach though as this can cause severe stomach upset. I recommend taking it straight away after your breakfast with a glass of water so that you can get it out the way early on in the day.
Nothing to Lose
I strongly recommend trying a Zinc supplement if you suffer from oily, acne-prone skin and am sure you will see a difference in your skin. The biggest difference I saw was the reduction in sebum that my skin produced and, for a person with extremely oily skin, this was literally life-changing for me. To be honest I saw the difference within only a couple of days of taking Zinc. I noticed that my skin was probably 50% less oily when I woke up in the morning, and throughout the day it took a lot longer for it to become quite so oily as it normally is. Now, after having taken it for about six months my skin is probably as much as 75-80% less oily than it was before I started taking Zinc supplements. So I strongly recommend this and believe you will receive at least some kind of benefit to your acne from taking Zinc, whether or not your result is quite as profound as mine. But either way, it’s safe to say that you certainly won’t do yourself any harm by trying it. It’s one of those things that you really have nothing to lose by trying.
It’s important to remember that there are a lot of factors that contribute to acne, and a Zinc deficiency is just one of those things. But nonetheless, it’s vital to tackle all the causes of your acne in order to truly clear and heal your skin. So working on your nutrition is an aspect that should not be over-looked.
