It’s the Small Things!
As acne sufferers we know all too well that it’s sometimes the smallest of things that can cause us to breakout. And this is because, more often than not, it’s the smallest of details that we forget. The small things that we do or don’t do can have a massive impact on the success of clearing our acne, so it’s of the utmost importance that we not only focus on the big obvious things like skincare products, but that we don’t forget the small details.
Here I will outline ten simple yet highly effective tips on how to prevent acne. I call these ‘The Big 10’ because incorporating them into your daily routine will have a BIG effect on preventing acne before it has a chance to rear its ugly head. Some may seem obvious, insignificant or even futile, but these are nonetheless the most easily forgotten tricks that will be a huge ally in your battle against acne. Prevention is always better than cure, so if you take my advice you will begin to follow these guidelines quickly until they become second nature to you. Good luck!
It’s easy to assume that once a spot pops up it’s down to our skincare products. Irrationality taken over and before you know it you’ve decided that it’s a great idea to change up your entire routine. But PLEASE don’t do this, it just becomes a vicious cycle that unfortunately never ends well. It costs a lot of money and in the end we are no better off for doing it. Changing your skincare products all the time just confuses and irritates your skin, so if you want to change things then be sure to do it slowly. Introduce one product and try it out for a couple of weeks before changing another one. It’s important to have a reliable base of effective skincare products that you won’t need to change often. Phones harbour an astronomical amount of bacteria. So much so, that if people could actually see the bacteria, I doubt very much that they would even touch their phone, let alone put it near their faces. This bacteria then transfers from our phone to our face when we hold it against it to talk, and in turn can cause more acne, lovely! What I like to do is invest in some antibacterial wipes to clean my phone and screen down with every few days. And furthermore I like to invest in new screen protectors every once in a while. So if you have acne on your cheeks then this may very well be one of the causes of it. Add antibacterial wipes and screen protectors to your Amazon.com basket pronto!
3. Don’t Touch
In addition to your phone, you really aught to be concerned about pretty much anything touching your face that may contaminate your skin with bacteria. Touching your face with your hands is a big problem for a lot of people, and a huge cause of acne as people are unaware of the amount of bacteria they are adding to their faces. Please begin to be aware of this habit, whether it’s just from pushing up your glasses, applying lip balm, rubbing or scratching, make sure that either you dont use your bare hands or, if you simply must, then ensure that they are super clean!
Another great tip is, rather than drying your face on your towel that you use to dry the rest of your body, dry it with paper towel instead. I just use the kitchen paper towel to gently dab my face after I have washed it, and this ensures that no unwanted bacteria from my towel transfers to my face. Think cleanliness is godliness!
4. Don’t Sleep on it!
We spend around a third of our life in bed, so lets make sure that this time is not spent resting our faces on a dirty pillowcase. Pillowcases have a hard life, in only one night they can collect an unappetizing cocktail of oil, sweat, hair, skin product, hair product and bacteria, all in abundance! It’s therefore essential that we don’t put our faces back onto it the following night, that’s just asking for trouble! Whatever you do, somehow change the pillowcase. Either turn it around so you have a clean side to sleep on the next night, or put a towel or tshirt over it which can easily be washed and replaced. Do anything, just as long as every night your face rests against a clean surface. Bliss!
5. Soak it up
Having oily skin is just a cross some of us must bear! That may sound dramatic but we wash our faces and within a matter of hours we are back to where we started! Where’s the justice in that? But allowing oil to sit on our faces all day is not ideal as it results in blocked pores and ultimately more acne. More often than not, it’s not convenient to wash our faces during the day to remove this oil, so for us oily-skinned people there was never a greater invention than oil blotting sheets. Simple take one, press it against the surface of your skin and VOILA … it absorbs all that nasty pore clogging stuff. They may look disgusting afterwards but they do your complexion the world of good. It’s better on the sheet than on your face. Blot as many times as required throughout the day, then save your face washing for before you go to bed. To read a full review on the very best oil blotting sheets click HERE!
6. Go Ahead and Squeeze
Call me controversial but this one simply has to be said. All those people who tell you never to squeeze spots have clearly never even had a single pimple, let alone acne! They literally can’t have! Because if they had they would know that there is no way you can leave the house with a giant pus-filled entity living smack bang in the middle of your face. There’s just no way! Nobody would do it! So when I read all those people writing about not squeezing spots it irks me and grates me completely the wrong way. However, I can be completely confident that their acne advice is useless because they have clearly never had it. Now obviously there is a right way to do it and a wrong way, and I am in no way advocating for you to do it the wrong way. Failure to do it safely and correctly can have serious consequences. 7. Heavy Metal
Take a Zinc supplement. Studies have shown that the majority of people who suffer from severe acne have a Zinc deficiency, so who am I to argue with that? taking a Zinc supplement will help to improve your levels. For acne sufferers, improving your levels of Zinc sufficiently means that your hormones will be more balanced thus resulting in less oily skin. Your body will be able to repair from damage more quickly therefore spots are able to heal quicker than before. Besides improving your acne, regular levels of Zinc have a number of other health benefits too, so really it’s a win-win situation. Be careful to choose a high quality Zinc supplement that is easily absorbed by the body. Click HERE to read about my favourite Zinc supplement.
8. Watch Your Hair
Never being fully done with trying to tweak and improve myself, I once took a notion to experiment with Nioxin shampoo and conditioner (the stuff that is supposed to stimulate hair growth), imagining myself waking up with an entire new head of hair. Well rest assured that didn’t happen! But what I did wake up with was an entire forehead and back completely covered in small, red, itchy breakouts. These persisted for at least two weeks after I stopped using the products. I had never before believed that a product used for the hair could have such an impact on my skin, so this was a big wake up call for me, and it should be for you too! So if you suffer from back or forehead acne I recommend switching your shampoo and conditioner for a couple of weeks to see if it makes any difference. It might just be that an irritating shampoo is what is breaking you out.
9. Acid Attack
Salicylic acid exfoliates your skin from the inside of the pore, meaning you don’t need to use an abrasive product on your already irritated skin. Furthermore it keeps your pores clear and enables a more regular flow of oil from the skin, so pores are less likely to block meaning you are less likely to break out. Salicylic acid is in an abundance of skin care products aimed at acne prone skin these days, but more often than not these products are not of a high enough quality or contain other ingredients that counteract the benefits of the Salicylic Acid. To experience the very best results that Salicylic Acid can possibly offer then click HERE to read my product recommendation. No other Salicylic Acid product even comes near to this in terms of quality, price and effectiveness.
10. Old School
So yes, the very mention of this word sends shivers down many a spine. It reminds most of us of school acne and how drying and irritating it was. But Benzoyl Peroxide products have come a long way since then. And this wonder-ingredient really is like no other when it comes to killing acne bacteria. Look at it this way, use Salicylc Acid to unblock the pores and Benzoyl Peroxide to reach deep down into them and kill the bacteria lurking inside, it’s as simple as that. It may take some time to work, but work it does! Note though that not all Benzoyl Peroxide products are created equally, so for the finest quality and the most gentle formulation you are going to want to try THIS product!
And there you go guys! Small changes for BIG results!
