Cleanser Pitfalls Part 1
Go to a store or look online and you’ll see that we have an abundance of options when we are looking for the best facial cleanser for acne. You may however be surprised to know that the majority of these are really not doing your skin any favours at all! Some of the most commonly added ingredients to the most well-known brands include Perfume, Peppermint, Salt, Walnut Shell, Peach Seed, Denatured Alcohol, Citrus Fruit Extracts, Menthol and Menthol derivatives such as Menthyl Lactate. While some of these ingredients may be ‘natural’ substances, it doesn’t mean that they are necessarily good for your skin (you wouldn’t rub a nettle on your face for example, would you?) and while companies may make bold marketing claims to convince their customers that, for example, the menthol or peppermint in their cleanser is soothing to inflamed acne, these claims are nothing more than just that; claims. And in reality these claims couldn’t be farther from the truth. Research into acne products by skincare companies and professionals who want to help rather than hinder their customers has proven that these ingredients, such as the ones mentioned earlier, actually cause undue irritation and inflammation deep down in the skin which can exacerbate acne.
Cleanser Pitfalls Part 2
And it doesn’t have to be this way. A cleanser doesn’t need any of these ingredients to do its job. Nor does it need to contain any medications or active ingredients. Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide are also commonly used but, although they are excellent ingredients which are an integral part in any successful acne clearing regime, their place is not in a cleanser. Added to a cleanser, not only do these ingredients have a high risk of reaching and stinging your eyes and the delicate skin around them, but most importantly they lose their potency because they are very quickly rinsed off, so they are not in contact with your skin long enough to be able to produce any tangible results.
So when it comes to choosing a cleanser, we need to be very careful to pick one that will not compromise our already troubled skin. We need one that will work FOR us and that will compliment an effective skincare routine. One without fragrance, irritants, medication or actives. And with all this in mind, our options are no longer quite so abundant!
The Perfect Cleanser: The Formulation
Luckily for you guys I have done all the hard work for you. You’d be hard pushed to find a cleanser that I haven’t tried and been disappointed in. The only one I’ve found that avoids all the pitfalls mentioned above and that ticks all the right boxes is none other than ‘Paula’s Choice Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser.’ It really is the perfect cleanser for acne prone skin. Formulated without unnecessary irritants and fragrance, this simple yet highly effective cleanser has the shortest list of ingredients I’ve ever seen on a facial cleanser. It contains just the essentials and nothing more.
Firstly, not to be mistaken for cheap foaming agent Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, this cleanser uses Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, which is derived from coconut oil, to facilitate a gentle, nurturing lather which effectively dissolves surface oil and dirt without overly disrupting the ph balance of your skin. Therefore your skin is not left with that tight sensation so often associated with acne cleansers.
Secondly, it contains a combination of Glycerin (an ingredient sourced from natural lipids) and Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) which act as humectants, drawing moisture to the skin from the environment and locking them in. This combination protects and cushions the skin, stopping it from dying out.
And finally, what makes this cleanser so ideally suited to acne prone skin is the addition of the ingredient Triclosan. This mild yet effective antibacterial agent has been shown by research to begin the process of killing acne causing bacteria and, unlike Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide, it has the ability to perform its function during your cleanse. Now, whilst this ingredient is not enough to clear acne on its own, it will certainly compliment the products you use afterwards. Most cleansers make unrealistic claims that their product is capable of clearing acne single-handedly, but if things like this were true then we wouldn’t be here on this website at all, would we? This cleanser makes no such stupid claims, nor should it. It will simply give you a clean face upon which you can apply your next products, and that’s what a great cleanser should do.
The Perfect Cleanser: How to Use
It’s really no different to use than any other cleanser. Just wet your face with warm water, pour a small quantity of the cleanser into your hands, lather, then wash for no more than thirty seconds. Don’t be shy to use this over your eyes too, it’s completely suitable for that area. Rinse off and pat dry with a clean towel or even some kitchen towel and you will immediately feel the difference between using this and other cleansers. Skin feels clean, smooth, supple and refreshed. The humectant-rich formula means it’s perfectly safe to go in for a second cleanse if you so wish, and your skin will still not dry out. The beauty of this product is its simplicity. It has your skins’ needs in mind and it gives just what is required of an excellent cleanser and nothing else. It leaves you perfectly prepped to apply your next products.
