Where to Start?
The ingredient Salicylic Acid has long been revered as an acne fighting wonder ingredient, and rightly so. Searching for the best acne products will undoubtedly lead you to hundreds of different skincare brands and products, all boasting this ingredient. But with so much choice available, Salicylic Acid products become no different from any other skincare products; there are thousands of bad ones to choose from but only a very limited number of good ones, so it’s crucial we get it right! But how do we navigate our way through all these options? Which one should we go for? Where in our routines should it be? How many times should we use it? So if you’re looking to find the best Salicylic Acid for acne treatment, then look no further. All your answers are right here.
What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic Acid is a Beta-Hydroxy Acid which is a close chemical relative of Aspirin. It’s primary function in skincare is simple; when applied topically it has the ability to penetrate sebaceous substances and break down fatty compounds, which is particularly useful for acne sufferers as it means the ingredient gently opens the pores and loosen clogs and plugs of sebum, which are responsible for trapping and harbouring acne causing bacteria deep inside the pores. Circulation to the skin is subsequently increased thereby stimulating the loose debris to move out of the pore and a regular flow of sebum is facilitated. This process is usually referred to as chemical exfoliation, as the skin is renewed from the very inside of the pore. This benefits us acne sufferers because it not only improves active breakouts but also hyperpigmentation marks caused by old acne, as both collagen production and cell regeneration is increased, resulting in old skin cells being sloughed away revealing fresh and clear ones. By including this ingredient into our skincare routine we can gain a renewed, refined and radiant complexion. Sounds great doesn’t it? But it’s not always that straight forward.
What Not to Use!
As I have said, there are a lot more poorly-formulated Salicylic Acid products than there are well-formulated ones. Many companies seem to just thrown this ingredient into everything, regardless of whether it will be effective or not. Cleansers are a great example of this. So many brands haphazardly add Salicylic Acid into their cleanser for acne prone skin, and then add a hefty price tag alongside it. The problem with this however is that the Salicylic Acid is not in contact with the skin long enough to perform its vital function before it’s simply rinsed away down the drain alongside all the money you just wasted on it. Theres no sense in that! It needs to be in contact with your skin for a decent length of time in order to have a chance of being able to exfoliate inside the pores, and that certainly can’t be achieved in thirty seconds with a quick wash.
A further problem with Salicylic Acid products is that it has become commonplace for companies to make this their go-to ingredient for making targeted spot treatments. These are tiny squeezable tubes which contain small quantities of Salicylic Acid, usually in a gel-base, that you are supposed to apply to your problem areas. But lets face it, for those of us with severe acne, its simply not feasible for us to dab product on each individual spot. That would not only be soul destroying way of wasting time, but also a waste of money as you would use up the tiny tube really quickly. Furthermore, I feel that by using a product only on active breakouts you are not tackling the problem at its root cause. In fact, you’re only getting to it when it’s too late, so to me its just a very reactive solution, and that’s certainly never something I look for in an acne product. I want something that will work for me and prevent rather than cure.
Best Salicylic Acid Product
So what’s an acne sufferer to do? Luckily I have done all the hard work for you! I’ve done the trial and error of many different variations of Salicylic Acid products over the years, and finally I can guarantee that I’ve found the best of the best, so that you can incorporate this wonder-ingredient into your routine. And what ive found is neither a spot treatment nor a cleanser. In fact this product isnt really comparable to anything else at all. It is so completely unique in the Salicylic Acid market and indeed the entire skincare market for that matter that it defies categorisation. It breaks all the rules of what a Salicylic Acid product should be and in essence it has created its own genre of skincare product. And this is the ‘Paula’s Choice Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution 2% Salicylic Acid Regular Strength.’ This product is applied after cleansing, and is a 2% Salicylic Acid concentration suspended in a water-light solution. You can apply it with just fingertips or use a cotton pad and sweep across the face as you would a toner. It absorbs completely leaving zero oily-residue and tackiness, and ensures that your entire face is being treated and protected by this powerful ingredient all day long, not just individual spots.
Made without nasties such as alcohol, colorants and fragrance, the formulation of this product is second to none. Not only is it a powerhouse of anti-irritants and skin-conditioning agents, this product has a low ph of around 3.9 which means it is sufficiently acidic to be able to fulfil its exfoliating capabilities in an effective yet gentle manner. More often than not, Salicylic acid products are not formulated with the correct concentration and ph to be able to actually function so if you have already tried many different ones to no avail then this product is sure to give you the results you have so far not seen. But using this twice a day this will give you unrivalled results in a truly skin friendly formulation, and will both heal and prevent breakouts best way to lose weight fast.
Please note that this product is also available in an extra strength formula but I don’t recommend going for that one. Whilst the salicylic acid concentration remains at 2%, the ph is even lower at 3.5 which requires a higher Glycol level in the formula. The resulting product has a slightly greasy consistency which can leave behind a residue on the skin causing it to look and feel oily. To avoid this inconvenience and impracticality, I recommend choosing just the regular strength version as you are getting the same ingredient and concentration, just in a much more wearable formula.

When I began using this product I saw results from the very first use. I applied it at night and I still remember waking up in the morning and noticing an immediate reduction in the anger and redness of my active breakouts. Overwhelmed with excitement from actually seeing a visible result I applied it again in the morning and within a couple of weeks I definitely had a great reduction in the severity of my breakouts. Overtime this product provides all the benefits that you could wish for from a Salicylic Acid product and is a huge asset to a skincare routine aiming to treat acne. One Last Thing!
It is important to remember that the function of this product is to exfoliate your skin and clear blockages and clogs, nothing more. So while this will go a long way in helping to clear your skin, if you have severe acne then this alone will not be sufficient as it doesn’t actually kill the bacteria trapped inside the pores. It will however improve the efficacy of an anti-bacterial product, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, that you use it in conjunction with. So I recommend leveraging both these ingredients for a well-rounded acne fighting regime.
